Hormone Therapy Q & A

What is hormone therapy?

Hormone therapy is a treatment option that focuses on restoring your natural hormone levels to resolve symptoms that relate to a hormone imbalance.

This therapy uses synthetic hormones that are structurally similar to the hormones your body makes naturally. Dr. Aduli may prescribe hormones in pill or implant form or as a cream to deliver a steady stream of hormones into your bloodstream.

Why do I need hormone therapy?

Hormone therapy is a treatment option for hormone imbalances that can result as you get older. For women, the transition to menopause (the time when menstrual periods stop for good) involves a natural decline in reproductive hormone levels, specifically estrogen and progesterone.

In men, the loss of reproductive hormones like testosterone can lead to difficulties getting or maintaining an erection healthy enough for sex, a condition known as erectile dysfunction (ED).

The loss of hormones in both men and women can lead to a wide variety of symptoms that can be severe enough to affect your physical and mental health, such as:

  • Hair loss
  • Weight gain
  • Mood swings
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Sexual dysfunction
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Reduced interest in sex
  • Hot flashes and sweating

You may also be at increased risk for osteoporosis (loss of bone density) and heart disease due to the loss of your reproductive hormones.

For some people, these symptoms are mild. Once hormones settle, many symptoms resolve on their own. However, if you’re experiencing symptoms severe enough to interfere with your quality of life, you may be a candidate for hormone therapy.

How do I know if I’m a candidate for hormone therapy?

During an evaluation, Dr. Aduli takes time to review your personal and family medical histories and request blood tests to measure your hormone levels.

Depending on the type and severity of your symptoms, Dr. Aduli can determine whether you would benefit from hormone therapy to replace levels of estrogen and progesterone in women and testosterone in men.

It can take some time to find the right type and dosage of hormones to resolve your symptoms. Dr. Aduli continues working with you to assess your symptom relief. He can also recommend lifestyle and dietary changes that help you feel better and keep your hormones well-balanced.
