Chest Pain Q & A

What causes chest pain?

Chest pain can range from a mild ache to persistent and sharp or burning pain. In some cases, you may experience chest pain that also radiates into other areas of your body, including down into your arms or up into your jaw or neck.

While you may feel occasional pain in your chest due to muscle tension and stress, chest pain can also be an indication that something more serious is wrong with your heart or lungs.

Common causes of chest pain include:

  • Heartburn
  • Heart attack
  • Rib injuries
  • Collapsed lung
  • Swallowing disorders
  • Heart inflammation (pericarditis)
  • Poor blood flow to the heart (angina)
  • Blood clot in the lungs (pulmonary embolism)

You may also have chest pain if you’re prone to panic attacks or anxiety.

When should I seek treatment for chest pain?

Occasional chest pain that results from muscle tension or heartburn typically resolves on its own with over-the-counter medications and rest.

However, if you experience intense pain or chest pain that isn’t getting better with treatment, you need to schedule a diagnostic evaluation at Louisiana Heart and Vascular as soon as possible.

Due to the many possible causes of chest pain, a prompt diagnosis is important for preventing serious complications. Dr. Aduli offers a variety of on-site testing services to uncover the root cause of your pain, so you can begin treatment right away.

In the event you have sudden chest pain, shortness of breath, and dizziness that may indicate a heart attack, you should call 911 or seek treatment at the nearest emergency room as soon as possible.

How is chest pain diagnosed?

There are a number of tests Dr. Aduli can use to determine what’s causing your chest pain. In addition to bloodwork to check for signs of heart damage common with heart attacks, he may request a:

Chest X-ray

Chest X-rays evaluate the health of your lungs and can detect a collapsed lung or pneumonia that may contribute to your chest pain.

Computerized tomography (CT) scan

A CT scan is beneficial for identifying blood clots in your lungs or damage in the blood vessels that carry blood to and from your heart.

Electrocardiogram (ECG)

An ECG uses electrodes that attach to your skin to measure the electrical activity of your heart. This test can show irregular electrical impulses that indicate a current or previous heart attack.

Once Dr. Aduli understands the cause of your chest pain, he creates a treatment plan to prevent further pain and serious health complications. This may include prescription medications, minimally invasive procedures, or diet and lifestyle changes that preserve and protect your heart and vascular health.
